Eloping In The Lake District With Kids — The Complete Guide
Eloping doesn’t mean disappearing. It doesn’t mean leaving people out or doing something secretive. For so many couples it simply means choosing an intimate, personal, low-stress way to get married — and when you have children, eloping in the Lake District might just be the most magical thing you ever do as a family.
I’ve photographed lots of Lake District elopements with kids and every single one has had something the big traditional wedding often struggles to achieve — genuine, unhurried joy. No seating plans, no timings running late, no children getting overtired waiting for speeches to end. Just a family, a landscape and a moment that belongs entirely to you.
Here’s everything you need to know about making it happen.
Why the Lake District is perfect for eloping with kids
The Lake District has a way of making everything feel more alive. Children who might fidget through a formal ceremony are suddenly scrambling up rocks, throwing stones in a tarn, chasing each other through bracken — and those are the photographs you’ll treasure forever. The landscape gives kids something to do, which means they’re relaxed, natural and genuinely present in a way that’s almost impossible to manufacture in a formal setting.
The fells, the lakes, the woodland, the little stone villages, it’s all backdrop. And for couples who want their elopement to feel like an adventure rather than a ceremony, there’s nowhere better in England.
What a Family Elopement in the Lake District Can Look Like
Here’s the edited version:
What a Family Elopement in the Lake District Can Look Like
There are essentially two ways to approach a family elopement in the Lake District, and both are equally beautiful.
In a registered venue
Working with one of the Lake District’s wonderful licensed venues — like Storrs Hall, Cragwood or Merewood — means your ceremony is legally binding on the day itself. These venues are experienced at intimate celebrations, their staff are brilliant with children, and the settings are stunning. You get the legal simplicity alongside the atmosphere and support of a beautiful hotel.
A venue elopement might look like this:
- Getting ready together in a beautiful hotel room, your photographer capturing the children proudly in their outfits
- A short walk to the ceremony space within the grounds
- A simple, personal ceremony with your children beside you
- Relaxed family photographs in the hotel gardens or on the lakeshore
- A celebratory meal together while the children explore the grounds
- Sunset portraits as the day winds down
Out in the landscape
If your heart is set on a fell top, a hidden tarn or a wild lakeshore, you can absolutely do that — with the legal paperwork handled separately. A quick, simple registry office appointment before or after means your landscape ceremony can be entirely personal, led by a celebrant who will create something completely bespoke for your family.
This might look like:
- Getting ready together in a cosy Lake District cottage or hotel room, your photographer capturing the children proudly in their outfits
- A short scenic walk to a ceremony spot overlooking a lake or fell
- A personal celebrant-led ceremony that includes your children beautifully
- Relaxed family photos and genuine exploring of the landscape
- A picnic or pub meal to celebrate
- Sunset photos while the kids play nearby
Both approaches share the same spirit
Whichever route you choose, a family elopement in the Lake District is less about following traditions and more about creating a meaningful experience together, one that your children will genuinely remember and that feels entirely, authentically yours.
Where to stay: from luxury to relaxed
One of the things that makes a Lake District elopement with kids so special is the accommodation. You’re not just getting married, you’re having an experience — and the Lake District offers everything from genuinely world class luxury to relaxed, homely stays that children love.
The luxury end
Another Place, Ullswater is one of the most beautiful hotels in England. Right on the shores of Ullswater with its own beach, outdoor pools, incredible food and a genuinely family-friendly atmosphere — it manages to feel luxurious and relaxed at the same time. Children are genuinely welcomed here, not just tolerated, and the setting is extraordinary.
Lodore Falls, Borrowdale sits at the foot of a waterfall in one of the most dramatic valleys in the Lake District. The spa, the setting, the food — it’s a genuinely special place to celebrate and the Borrowdale valley gives you some of the most dramatic landscape photography in the area.
Low Wood Bay, Windermere combines a beautiful lakeside setting with excellent facilities for families including watersports. If your children want to be active and on the water it’s a brilliant choice, and the location on the eastern shore of Windermere is stunning.
Langdale Chase grandly set between Windermere and Ambleside the terrace offers some of the best sunsets in the area.
The relaxed end
Not every family wants or needs a luxury hotel, and the Lake District has some brilliant relaxed options that children often prefer.
Fell Foot at the southern tip of Windermere is a National Trust site with camping and glamping options right on the lake. Waking up to Windermere on the morning of your elopement, children running to the water’s edge — there’s something incredibly pure about that.
Park Foot, Ullswater is a brilliant family campsite and holiday park on the shores of Ullswater. For families who want their elopement to feel like a proper holiday adventure rather than a formal occasion, staying somewhere like this gives the whole experience a completely different and genuinely joyful energy.
Limefitt Park, Troutbeck sits in the Troutbeck Valley between Windermere and Kirkstone Pass — beautiful, peaceful and surrounded by fells. For families who want to explore the wider Lake District during their elopement stay it’s perfectly positioned.
Practical tips for eloping in the Lake District with kids
1. Plan the day around their energy
Children tend to do best earlier in the day. Many couples choose a late morning or early afternoon ceremony so everyone is happy and relaxed.
2. Keep the timeline simple
Elopements work best when there’s breathing room. Instead of rushing between locations, pick a beautiful spot and enjoy the time together. Children have a natural attention span and formal proceedings test it.
A short, personal ceremony: even just ten minutes — keeps everyone present and engaged.
3. All important food
This might sound simple, but meal times, snacks and drinks are key to keeping everyone smiling. Choose mess free options for an elopement picnic or family friendly catering.
4. Let kids be part of the ceremony
Children can:
hold rings
help carry flowers
walk you down the aisle
read something during the ceremony
or simply hold your hand
These moments often become the most emotional parts of the day.
5. Build in unstructured time
Early morning elopements before the crowds arrive are magical, especially at popular lake locations. Late afternoon in summer gives you beautiful golden light. In autumn and winter the light is extraordinary almost all day.
6. Don’t stress about the weather
Lake District weather is part of the experience, not a problem to be solved. Some of my most beautiful elopement photographs have been taken in drizzle, mist and dramatic skies. Children don’t mind rain when they’re having an adventure, and waterproofs are genuinely part of the Lake District aesthetic.
The best moments I photograph are never the planned ones. Build in time where children can just be children — throwing stones, paddling, climbing, exploring. That’s where the real photographs are.
Why choosing the right photographer matters
Eloping with children requires a photographer who understands both wedding photography and family photography: someone who can capture the ceremony beautifully while also being relaxed and patient enough to work with children naturally.
I’ve been photographing Lake District weddings and families for years, and that dual experience is genuinely rare. My family photography work — which you can see over at Anna Bailey Photography — means I’m completely at home with children on a shoot. (I have two gorgeous kiddies myself.) I know how to make the whole day feel relaxed and joyful rather than pressured.
