There’s a quieter side to Windermere that most visitors never find.
The western shore, the Graythwaite side, has none of the boats, the ice cream shops, or the summer crowds of Bowness. It’s a different lake entirely: unhurried, wooded, genuinely wild in places, and breathtakingly beautiful. The Venue
Silverholme is a Grade II listed Georgian Manor house built in 1820, lovingly restored in 2013 and now one of the most special exclusive-hire wedding venues in the Lake District. It sits within the privately owned Graythwaite Estate: 5,000 acres of woodland, farmland and lakeside grounds. And when you hire Silverholme for your wedding, you have the run of all of it.
The manor itself sleeps 18 adults across 9 en-suite bedrooms, each with either lake or woodland views. It’s been restored with a light touch — original period features sit alongside underfloor heating, a Sonos sound system, and every modern comfort you’d want. It feels like a very beautiful private home, because that’s essentially what it is.
The Grounds and Ceremony Options
Silverholme is fully licensed for civil ceremonies in several spaces: the elegant Dining Hall, the more relaxed Drawing Room (both up to 25 guests), or the Coach House, which holds up to 100 and is a stunning stone-floored flexible space that works equally well for ceremonies, receptions and dancing. The lawns sweeping down to the shore of Windermere hold up to 200 guests with the lake as your backdrop — honestly one of the most beautiful ceremony settings I’ve seen anywhere in Cumbria.
For larger parties, a tipi or marquee is required and can be sited on a purpose-built astroturf area beside the manor — no mud, whatever the weather, whatever the month.
The Accommodation
This is what sets Silverholme apart for couples with large families or a wide circle of friends travelling to the Lake District together.
Beyond the 18 guests in the manor itself, the Graythwaite Estate has a further 37 holiday properties sleeping from 2 to 12 guests each, accommodating up to 200 people in total across the estate. Guest rates and discounts can be negotiated for wedding bookings, and several of the nearest cottages — including Low Graythwaite Hall — are within easy walking distance of Silverholme.
This means your wedding isn’t a single day, it’s a full weekend. Your people wake up together, walk to breakfast together, and share the aftermath of the day in the same extraordinary place. For families travelling from afar, or friends who rarely get to spend proper time together, that weekend-in-the-Lake-District feeling is often what guests remember just as much as the ceremony itself.
Graythwaite Adventure is also on the estate and can arrange activities for guests: axe throwing, paddle boarding, clay pigeon shooting, 4×4 off-road driving which makes for a genuinely full wedding weekend rather than just a single evening.

The light on the western shore of Windermere is softer and more dramatic than the busier eastern side, the grounds give you woodland, lakeside and formal garden settings all within a few minutes’ walk, and the manor itself has beautiful natural light in the reception rooms.
