Getting Married at Storrs Hall Hotel in Windermere

If you’re planning a wedding at Storrs Hall Hotel on the shores of Lake Windermere, you’re choosing one of the most beautiful and romantic wedding venues in the Lake District.

As a Lake District wedding photographer based in Windermere just minutes from the venue! I regularly photograph weddings at Storrs Hall and across the surrounding area. With its lakeside views, elegant Georgian architecture and peaceful gardens, the venue offers a stunning setting for relaxed, natural wedding photography.

Whether you’re planning an intimate ceremony overlooking the water or a larger celebration with family and friends, Storrs Hall provides incredible backdrops throughout the day. Did you know it has a private jetty on Lake Windermere and the unique Temple of Heroes.

This guide will help you explore what makes Storrs Hall such a special place to get married, along with photography ideas and helpful tips if you’re planning your own wedding here.

Why Couples Choose Storrs Hall

Storrs Hall is a venue where grandeur meets tranquility. It’s an impressive building set with spectacular views on the shores of Lake Windermere. Yet it always feels peaceful and calm away from the hustle and bustle of other parts of Windermere.

The staff are attentive and there’s normally a fire or two roaring in the lounge and bar.

Inside, the house has interesting architecture with grand staircases, pillars and circular landings. Outside, the gardens are vast with areas of woodland, a huge lawn and lots of interesting space including a pavilion, jetty and the Temple of Heroes.

It’s a venue that feels premium yet calm.

A Lake District Venue that Changes with the Seasons

Cragwood works beautifully all year round.

In the cooler months, there’s almost always a fire lit, adding to the cosy, welcoming feel of the house. Winter weddings here feel intimate and warm, with soft light, rich textures, and that unmistakable sense of retreat from the outside world.

In spring and summer, the gardens come into their own — flowers in bloom, paths leading down towards the lake, and plenty of outdoor space for guests to spread out without feeling crowded. On warm days, everything naturally flows outside, and the lakeside setting becomes part of the celebration.

Whatever the season, Cragwood feels settled and grounded — never hurried, never overwhelming.

Getting Married at Storrs Hall Hotel

Storrs Hall Hotel is one of the most elegant wedding venues in the Lake District, sitting right on the shores of Lake Windermere with sweeping views across the water. The Georgian mansion and landscaped grounds create a peaceful and romantic setting that feels both intimate and timeless.

Couples often choose Storrs Hall for its relaxed atmosphere and beautiful lakefront setting. Whether you’re planning a smaller celebration with close family or a larger gathering with friends, the venue offers a wonderful balance of classic architecture, gardens and lakeside scenery. I seem to have good luck with the weather here and my couples have enjoyed outdoor ceremonies, but the indoor space works beautifully too.

One of the things couples love most is the sense of calm the venue provides. Being slightly tucked away from the busier parts of Windermere means your wedding day can feel private and unhurried, allowing you to fully enjoy the moment.

Best Wedding Photography Locations Around Storrs Hall

There are several beautiful spots around Storrs Hall that work particularly well for wedding photography.

The private lakeshore and jetty are often favourites for couples portraits, especially in the evening when the light over Lake Windermere becomes soft and golden. The gardens around the house also provide lovely spaces for relaxed photographs with family and friends.

For couples who want a few quieter portraits away from the main celebrations, the tree-lined paths and unique Temple of Heroes feel very natural and connected to the landscape. Even on a wet and windy day it’s close enough to stroll to for photographs.

Some of my favourite spots for photographs include:

  • the circular landings

  • the moody blue bar area

  • lakeside paths and jetties

  • the pillars at the front entrance

Because everything is close together, portraits can happen naturally, without pulling you away from your guests for long periods of time.

For couples who’d like something a little different, it’s also easy to plan additional portraits elsewhere in the fells around Windermere either on the day or at a separate time.

Making It Your Own

Storrs Hall works beautifully for:

– ‘just the two of us’ weddings

– intimate family elopements (do you know I never charge extra for kids for elopement photography)

– large, vibrant wedding celebrations

There’s no single way to do things here, and that flexibility is part of its appeal.
