Steph & Ben’s Silverholme Manor Wedding
A marquee full of energy on Windermere’s quiet west shore
Silverholme Manor is one of those places that makes you slow down the moment you arrive. Tucked away on the Graythwaite Estate, on the quiet west shore of Windermere, it feels miles from the busy side of the lake.
That’s where Steph and Ben celebrated, and it was a brilliant day. The ceremony moved indoors and the party moved into the marquee, which turned out to be the best decision of the day. Everyone under one roof, the dance floor full, and an atmosphere that just kept building.
When the weather had other plans
Steph and Ben’s Silverholme Manor wedding was meant to happen outside. The weather decided otherwise.
By the morning it was clear the ceremony and the party were going indoors. There were no long faces about it. Just a quick change of plan, and a day that ended up with more energy than anyone expected.
Silverholme sits on the quiet west shore of Windermere, on the Graythwaite Estate. On a dry day the lawns and the lake do all the work. On a wet one, it turns out the marquee does.
The ceremony, moved inside
Moving a ceremony indoors changes the feel of it. Everyone’s closer. The room is quieter. You hear every word of the vows.
That’s what happened here. Jam packed and filled with emotion. Steamy, rain on the windows, everyone leaning in, and Steph and Ben barely noticing anything but each other.
I love an indoor ceremony on a grey day. The light through big windows is soft and even, and nobody’s squinting into the sun.
The marquee was the best room of the day
This is the bit I want couples to see. When everyone’s under one roof, the energy builds in a way it doesn’t when people are spread across a garden.
The marquee filled up fast. Drinks, speeches, dancing, all in one space, with the rain drumming overhead. The couple entered to a 90s trance favourite accompanied by much laugher and those napkins spinning! The speeches were filled with happy tears and giggles. By the evening it was loud, warm, and full of people having the best time.
A lot of couples worry that a wet day means a flat day. Steph and Ben’s wedding is the proof it doesn’t.
Portraits in the gaps
Lake District weather rarely rains all day without a break. When it eased, we went out. Down to the lake and into the gardens. The couple very honestly told me they didn’t want to miss much of their day so we just took ten minutes, and it was enough.
Mist on the water, deep greens, moody skies.
Planning a Silverholme Manor wedding? Have a rain plan you actually like:
In the Lakes, a rain plan isn’t a backup. It’s half the plan. A few things that help:
- Love your indoor option as much as the outdoor one. Walk through it with the venue and picture the whole day happening there.
- Think about the marquee as the heart of the day. Lighting, layout and a dance floor in the middle make it feel like a party, not a shelter.
- Pack for it. Clear umbrellas (I always have these), a warm layer, and shoes you don’t mind getting wet. They make for some of the best photos.
- Keep portraits flexible. Tell your photographer you’re happy to pop out when it clears, even for ten minutes.
- Let it go on the morning. The couples who shrug at the forecast have the best days, every time.
