As a Lake District wedding photographer specialising in small weddings and elopements, I’ve photographed celebrations across the region and know which venues truly shine for relaxed, meaningful days.

What is an intimate or micro wedding?
Intimate and micro weddings have grown hugely in popularity in the Lake District, and it’s easy to see why. Stripped back to what really matters, they are personal and relaxed.
The terms get used interchangeably, so choose however you’d like to describe yours, but here are some loose distinctions worth knowing:
Elopement — just the two of you, or with one or two witnesses. No guest list, no seating plan, no compromise. Some couples choose a totally private ceremony; others incorporate a celebratory meal or a photographer to capture the day. It’s worth noting that some venues — and myself — don’t count your children in the guest number, so if you’re dreaming of eloping but can’t imagine doing it without the kids, that’s often more possible than you’d think.
Micro wedding — typically up to 20-30 guests, sometimes as few as 8. Small enough to feel intimate, big enough to include the people who matter most. Many Lake District venues have dedicated micro wedding packages designed around smaller numbers.
Small wedding — generally considered up to around 50 guests. Still a fraction of a traditional wedding, but with more flexibility on venue choice and format.
Intimate wedding — less about numbers, more about atmosphere. An intimate wedding feels personal and unhurried, whatever the guest count.

Choosing the perfect small wedding venue comes down to what will make your day feel most like you. When you’re planning an intimate celebration in the Lake District, these are a few things worth considering:

Guest numbers — some venues are ideal for just the two of you, while others suit 20–30 guests comfortably

FAQs About Intimate Weddings in the Lake District
What are the best months to get married in the Lake District?
May–October offers warmer days and long evenings. Spring and autumn are stunning for colour and quieter locations. Winter is also a beautiful option, with dramatic skies and the cosy comfort of country house hotels. Working with me means I can get to you whatever the weather from my local Windermere base and knowledge of the Lake District roads.
Will the weather affect our photos?
The Lakes are known for changing weather, but this only adds atmosphere. We can always adapt, and moody clouds make beautiful images.
How much time should we plan for photos?
For relaxed portraits, 20–30 minutes is ideal.
Do you help with planning photo locations?
Absolutely — I know plenty of hidden spots near each venue, perfect for a short wander or adventure.
Do I need a licence for an intimate wedding in the Lake District?
If you want a legally binding ceremony, yes — it needs to take place at a licensed venue with a registered celebrant or registrar. Many Lake District venues are fully licensed for both indoor and outdoor ceremonies. If you’d prefer a symbolic ceremony first and to sign the legal paperwork separately, a celebrant-led ceremony gives you much more freedom on location.
Do I need a wedding photographer for a micro wedding?
You don’t need one, but most couples are glad they had one. Intimate weddings actually photograph beautifully – calm moments, and more time to be creative with locations. As a Windermere-based photographer I specialise in exactly these kinds of relaxed, small celebrations.
How far in advance should I book?
Popular venues and dates go quickly even for smaller weddings — 12-18 months ahead is sensible for peak weekend season. If you’re flexible on date, you can find mid-week availability much sooner. It’s also worth asking venues if they have cancellation dates.
